Could Instagram be a tool for social change?
Hear me out is an Augmented Reality (AR) project that tackles gender-based violence (GBV) using Instagram filters.
We wanted to highlight the worldwide shocking number of cases of GBV using AR as a data visualization tool. Additionally, the aim was to motivate the users to be part of the social media campaign and create user-generated content with our insta filter and our #HearMeOut.
Together with Eliane Eid, and Hady Aim, we developed this project in the frame of the United Nations – 2021 My World 360. Our project was selected to be screened as part of the Global Week of Action from September 17-28, held during the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly.
Motivation
– Visualize gender based violence and inspire action.
-Innovate in ways of data visualisation and experiment with AR filters.
– Connect worldwide Digital communities with social media and a #based campaign. #Act4SDGs #MYWorld360 #turnitaround #fightforgenderequality
Filter 1 – Data Visualisation
“1 of every 3 women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence” (United Nations Women, 2020)
Filter 2 – I am part of the change
The use of filters on social media is a fun way of interaction between the digital community.
When you open the front camera you can see yourself surrounded by dull and dying flowers.
We need victims to be willing to denounce aggressions and also to motivate society in general to speak out in the face of any injustice. Denounce! listen!
